KITCHEN SINK MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

Is Your Kitchen Sink Line Draining Slowly or Not at All?

Kitchen Drain Maintenance

Keeping your sink and garbage disposal clean of debris is the first step to preventing a blockage. Many people don’t know this, but there are actually a number of foods and non-perishable items that can cause real damage to your kitchen line and pipes. In order to prevent blockages, it is a good idea to avoid grease, such as cooking oil, but also coffee grounds, starch products and store-bought drain cleaners.

Prevent Kitchen Sink Line Clogs by Avoiding:

fatberg

Grease and Cooking Oil

Grease and oil are the leading cause of pipe blockages. Many homeowners are quick to pour grease or cooking oil down the drain because it appears to be liquid. However, when fats from oil and grease mix with sewer chemicals they create a nauseating buildup that blocks pipes. Over time, you and your neighbors may be destroying some of your own pipes. These gross “fatbergs” eventually block sewer lines and cause hazardous backups. This is most common in restaurants but it can occur in your local neighborhood as well. Next time you cook, remember to dispose of your oil by recycling it

Non-Food Items

Some foods come wrapped in plastic, rubber bands, twist ties, and more packaging materials. It may seem easy to throw them in the drain or garbage disposal, but don’t. These items will not break down enough to be washed down the drain and are one of the many causes of easily preventable blockages.

danger

Liquid Drain Cleaners

Store bought drain cleaners are only a temporary solution. First, the toxic fumes are simply not good fro you and are worse for the environment. Second, while they may help to unclog a drain, the greasy mess gets sent straight into the sewers, which causes bigger problems down the line. In fact, these chemical-infused dislodged blockages can cause corrosion that will ruin pipe surfaces.

Starch Products and Coffee Grounds

Water turns starchy foods like rice, beans, potatoes, pasta, and flour into a gluey paste that clogs pipes. It is a misconception that coffee grounds deodorize and clean your drain. In fact, these same grounds that get you up and moving in the morning can stop up your pipes. They build up like sand, lodging in the nooks and crannies of the pipes, eventually growing into coffee ground dunes that cause blockages. Remember, you can use these coffee grounds as fertilizer for your plants. You can save your kitchen line and beautify your garden all while enjoying your morning cup of joe.
